Before giving away or throwing out an old desktop or laptop, it’s crucial to protect your data, ensure proper disposal, and prepare the device for its next use or recycling. Here's a checklist of important steps:

Back Up Your Data

Deauthorize and Sign Out of Accounts

Operating System AccountSign out of Microsoft/Apple/Google accounts.

Perform a Factory Reset (or Reinstall OS)

Wipe the Drive Securely (If Not Reusing)

Recommended Software To Use:

  • DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke)
  • Eraser (Windows)
  • macOS Disk Utility with “Security Options” slider
  • shred or dd for Linux

Clean the Computer (Optional but Helpful)

Wipe down the keyboard, screen, and casing. Use compressed air to clean vents and fans.
